A patient in the United Kingdom battled the disease for 18 months – during which time he was infected by 10 mutations of the virus. Patient died 505 days after first being diagnosed with the virus, back in 2020. Infectious disease expert Dr Luke Blagdon Snell says it is the longest reported infection.

He and his team are planning to present their findings at an infectious disease meeting in Portugal this weekend.

Out of these nine patients, four died and two required treatment to fight the virus.
