Afghanistan’s government has banned girls from attending school above the sixth grade. The UN Security Council has expressed deep concerns over the Taliban government’s ban on girls going to school in many parts of the country, including Kandahar province and Uruzgan region.

The UN Security Council has called on the Taliban to reopen schools for all female students in Afghanistan, including those closed due to Taliban-led violence against girls’ education and girls’ access to the education they were denied under the Taliban’s Peshawar-Taliban insurgency.

The members stressed the importance of efforts by the international community to support Afghanistan, including on education, a UNSC statement said.
