The Congress party on Thursday released the first list of candidates for the Uttar Pradesh parliamentary elections, which will begin on February 10. General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said the party had given women a large representation in the upcoming elections.
“Out of a total of 125 candidates, 40 percent are women and 40 percent are young people. With this historic move, we hope to introduce a new kind of politics in the state,” she said during a virtual conference.
Vadra said there were 50 female candidates on the list, including the mother of Unnao’s rape victim. “We sent Poonam Pandey, an Asha worker from Shahjahanpur, who led an agitation to raise the remuneration,” she added.
In the past few months, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has announced several women-focused commitments, including smartphones for girls who pass grade 12, electric scooters for graduating women, and a skills development school for women
