According to sources, the Uttar Pradesh government rejected the Central Bureau of Investigation’s recommendation to take action against IAS officer Aditi Singh in the 2017 Unnao rape case and gave her a clean opportunity. In September 2020, the CBI recommended “appropriate action” against four officials, including IAS officer Aditi Singh, on the grounds that they had made a mistake in handling the rape of an underage girl in Unnao by the former People’s Party MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar.
The central agency appointed the then magistrates Unnao, Aditi Singh, then police chief and IPS officers Pushpanjali Devi and Neha Pandey, and ASP Ashtbhuja Singh in a letter to the UP government in August 2020. In the letter, the CBI emphasized the mistakes in handling the rape case and the subsequent harassment of the family by Sengar’s followers. CBI did not request any disciplinary action against the four officials.
The source said it only highlighted the mistakes of these officials and asked the Uttar Pradesh government to take “appropriate action” based on the agency’s observations. In 2019, the Delhi court found Sengar guilty of raping underage girls in Unnao, calling the victim’s testimony to “powerful people” “true and unblemished”.
The court sentenced Senga to life imprisonment. The 53-year-old Sengar was convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), and the court stated that the CBI proved that the victim was a minor.
