Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Bhim Army Chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad announced on Saturday that his party, the Azad Samaj Party, will ally with the Samajwadi Party (SP) against the state polls.
Samajwadi Party leaders Akhilesh Yadav and Chandra Shekhar Aazad will hold a press conference on Saturday at 12.30pm.
Speaking to India today, Chandra Shekhar Aazad said: “The alliance has been confirmed. That’s why I’m going there (for the press conference). I will tell the media at 10am that everything has been decided.”
Aazad also avoided disclosing details of the seat-sharing agreement with the SP.
However, the police refused to allow Aazad to hold a press conference at his Lucknow office due to Covid-19 restrictions and Section 144. Police said they had notified the party earlier about it, but the party chose to ignore it. Samajwadi Party has allied with Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). ), Janwadi Party (Socialists), Apna Dal (Krishna Patel), Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party-Lohia (PSP-L) and Mahan Dal.
By joining forces with the Azad Samaj Party, the SP will seek to tap into the Dalit voter base of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
Uttar Pradesh will vote on 403 MLAs in seven phases between February 10 and March 7. Counting will take place on March 10.
