The United States has asked its citizens to reconsider travel to India due to the increased spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in India.
The request comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a Level 3 travel health notice for India, which indicated a high prevalence of the virus.
“If you are fully vaccinated with an FDA-authorized vaccine, your risk of contracting Covid-19 and developing severe symptoms may be reduced,” the State Department said in a statement Tuesday. It also said it planned to visit citizens of other countries to review CDC recommendations for vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers.
Last November, the CDC issued a Level 1 Covid-19 notification for Americans traveling to India.
India’s Covid-19 tally has passed the 40 million mark after 285,914 infections were reported in the past 24 hours. New deaths continued to surge, bringing the death toll to 491,127. To date, more than 37.3 million patients have recovered from Covid-19.
Daily cases are unlikely to exceed 400,000 as the country is currently battling a third wave of the pandemic. However, the wave driven by the Omicron variant is spreading rapidly in rural areas.
At the same time, the U.S. State Department is also urging Americans to be more cautious in India over crime and terrorism.
