The two highest-ranking U.S. senators in charge of foreign policy bipartisanly condemned China’s decision to send an army commander involved in the Galwan conflict as the torchbearer for the Winter Olympics, and praised India’s decision not to send a diplomatic representative to the event on Friday the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
Separately, the U.S. State Department reiterated its concerns about China’s continued attempts to “intimidate its neighbors” and said it stood with friends, partners and allies in the Indo-Pacific region.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez, one of the most powerful voices on U.S. foreign policy in Washington, D.C., tweeted: “I applaud India for joining the diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics. .We stand with all countries that oppose the CCP’s heinous human rights abuses and cold-blooded efforts to turn #Olympics2022 into a political victory lap.”
