Kolkata: Visva-Bharati students demonstrating for the reopening of their dormitories on Wednesday got into an altercation with university security guards when they tried to gain access to the main office by climbing over the border wall. SFI leader Somnath Sow said students had been agitating for a week to reopen dorms, but the vice-chancellor had not responded.
“We have asked the Deputy Principal to speak to us, but he has not responded. As in-person classes resume, many non-local students are struggling to fund their hotel accommodation,” Sow said.
He said some of them tried to climb over the border wall as the university’s security staff denied students access to the headquarters. “Many of us were mistreated by security personnel, leading to scuffles. We were harassed by security forces for making impartial claims,” he added.
Students will continue to demonstrate until the university reopens dorms that have been closed since the pandemic began, he said.
A university spokesman said the agitated students had caused trouble and pursued security forces who were carrying out their work because group access to headquarters was not allowed. He said no decision had been made on reopening hotels.
