The Congress government led by Charanjit Singh Channi on Saturday appointed 1987 Indian Police Service (IPS) officer VK Bhawra as the state’s new Chief Police Officer (DGP), hours before the Punjab assembly election date was announced. Bhawra succeeds DGP Sidharth Chattopadhyaya, who faced scrutiny following a security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab on January 5.

The government order issued in Chandigarh said that Viresh Kumar Bhawra’s term of office should be at least two years from the date he took office.

Earlier, the Federal Public Service Commission had sent a three-person team to the state government, including former DGP Dinkar Gupta, Bhawra and Prabodh Kumar, for the state’s top police post.
