Weekend curfew lifted in Ukraine; Head towards train stations, India advises students

Amid the crises in Russia and Ukraine, the Indian embassy said on Monday that the weekend curfew in Kyiv had been lifted. The embassy advised students to go to the train station, adding that Ukrainian Railways used special trains for evacuation.

“The weekend curfew in Kyiv was lifted. All students are advised to go to the train station to continue to the western region. Ukrainian Railways used special trains for evacuation.”

On Sunday, Foreign Minister Harsh Vardan Shringra said that the Indian government has launched a multi-pronged evacuation plan called “Operation Ganges” to evacuate Indian citizens stranded in Ukraine. The center has also set up a special Twitter account “OpGanga Helpline” to help evacuate Indians from Ukraine as part of Operation Ganga. Given the current emergency, the Indian government is covering the cost of the evacuation.

The Twitter account lists helpline numbers for Hungary, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic – all countries that border Ukraine. The MEA has sent a team of Russian-speaking officers there to help with the evacuation process. Border crossings to Hungary and Romania are working, but exports to Poland are congested as thousands of Ukrainians and foreigners try to leave the country through this point.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reportedly dispatch four union ministers to Ukraine’s neighbouring country on Monday to coordinate the evacuation of stranded Indians amid Russia’s ongoing military operation in Ukraine.

The four ministers that are most likely to go to Ukraine’s neighbouring countries are–Hardeep Singh Puri, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kiren Rijiju, and Gen (Retd) VK Singh. These Ministers will be going as special envoys of India.

Prime Minister Modi also held a second high-level meeting on the current situation in Ukraine, especially the evacuation of Indian citizens.

Prime Minister Modi held a two-hour meeting with Foreign Minister Jay Shankar, Foreign Minister Hash Shringra, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Koba and many senior officials on the current situation in Ukraine.

As part of Operation Ganges, India has launched a special operation of Air India to evacuate Indian nationals from Ukraine. Five flights have so far brought hundreds of Indians back to Delhi and Mumbai.
