The ruling Trinamool Congress took early leads in three municipalities as the counting of votes polled in 107 civic bodies in West Bengal began on Wednesday morning. TMC was on the way to win 46 municipalities till 9:30 am, and has a strong lead in Mekhliganj and Mathabhanga municipalities in Coochbehar district.
The polls were held on February 27 with nearly 95 lakh people voting. The top contenders were the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the CPIM-led Left Front and Congress.
BJP demands re-polling in all the booths across 108 municipalities, in presence of Central forces (CAPFs). The ruling Trinamool Congress previously won all five civic elections. BJP alleges that the police and the State Election Commission had failed to ensure a free and fair election.
