The West Indies and Ireland have decided to postpone a second ODI scheduled for Tuesday (January 11) after three new Covid cases emerged in tourist camps following the latest round of testing. Coupled with two injuries in the squad, Ireland has been severely drained of competitiveness.
The boards of the two participating teams issued a joint statement confirming the postponement of the game at Sabina Park, Jamaica, and said they were discussing and “working hard to explore all possibilities” to complete the series.
Ireland was hit by a high number of Covid cases last month, forcing them to drop their ODI series against the US. While cases have emerged among support staff and family members, the players themselves are considered close contacts. Paul Stirling and Shane Getkate later tested positive after the series was canceled and quarantined in Florida. Ireland are behind a three-game series after losing 24 games in their first ODI, with injuries to Andy McBrin and Mark Adair. The former developed some concussion symptoms after being hit in the first ODI.
As planned, teams will play a third ODI on January 14, before wrapping up the tour with a one-time T20I on January 16.
