WhatsApp adds support for end-to-end encrypted backups on Android, iOS

WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption and its general emphasis on security are one of the USPs of the application. However, earlier this year, the integration of WhatsApp with Google Drive or iCloud has recently received attention because the backups that instant messaging tools will adopt and store on these cloud-based platforms do not enjoy the same encryption protection as chats. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, WhatsApp announced that it will provide end-to-end encrypted backups for its users.

This feature is finally live today, and will soon be rolled out on iOS and Android devices with new updates. WhatsApp called the move “the last step in providing a complete end-to-end encrypted messaging experience.” The company stated in a post: “With end-to-end encrypted backups, no other messaging service on the WhatsApp scale will provide this level of security for people’s messages-from sending and transmitting to receiving and storing in In the clouds.”

“For many years, we have been providing people with the ability to back up WhatsApp chat history so that they can restore WhatsApp if they lose or change their phones. We are now rolling out an option for iOS and Android users to create end-to-end encrypted backups for Users who need it provide additional security protection. If someone chooses to back up their chat history with end-to-end encryption, only they can access it, and no one can unlock their backup, not even WhatsApp. WhatsApp and backup service providers (Such as Apple) are unable to access their end-to-end encryption keys or end-to-end encrypted backups,” WhatsApp added.

“You can now use a password of your choice or a 64-bit encryption key that only you knows to protect your end-to-end encrypted backup. Neither WhatsApp nor your backup service provider can read your backup or access the password required to unlock it. Key,” the company added.
