We look back on the occasions when late superstar Dev Anand discussed his first love, Suraiya, on the occasion of his 99th birthday. In a number of movies, including Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shair (1949), Afsar (1950), Nili (1950), Do Sitare (1951), and Sanam, the two had collaborated.

Their love affair was discussed in detail in Dev Anand’s autobiography, Romancing with Life. According to PTI, he had said regarding the book, “It was destined that way. My life would have been different if I had gone to her. My life would have taken a different turn if I had married her. Maybe I wouldn’t be the Dev Anand I am today if it had happened.

When Dev Anand saved Suraiya from drowning while filming the song Kinare Kinare Chale Jayen Ge for the movie Vidya, they immediately fell in love. Dev dived into the lake to save her after she fell from the boat. In one of her interviews, Suraiya claimed that if he hadn’t intervened to save her, she wouldn’t be alive today. This drew her to Dev Anand’s attention.

Despite Suraiya’s grandmother’s objections, they eventually met, and the actor eventually caved. It is reported that Suraiya even had plans to elope with Dev Anand before her grandmother found out and derailed them. She objected to their interfaith romance.

Dev Anand acknowledged his fate and remarked, “I experienced my first true love. We are all familiar with the effects of first love on people. The pain of failing to obtain it follows. After being encouraged, optimism was suddenly rekindled, but disappointment returned when nothing changed.”

In 1954, Dev Anand wed Kalpana Kartik for good. Son Suneil Anand and daughter Devina were their two children.
