On Thursday, veteran lyricist-poet, author, and filmmaker Gulzar turns 88. He has explored many songs and given words to a wide range of human emotions throughout the course of a career spanning more than six decades. When he composed Aishwarya Rai’s dance song for the movie Bunty Aur Babli, Gulzar surprised everyone with an item number.
Amitabh Bachchan, his son Abhishek Bachchan, and the latter’s wife Aishwarya all danced together in the Shaad Ali-directed film Kajra Re. The movie came out in 2005.
Gulzar had stated to Hindustan Times in 2006 in regards to the song’s lyrics, “Serious poetry would have been out of place here. The lyrics on the trucks that are rushing up and down the highways in north India are the main source of inspiration for the song. Keep in mind that the female lead comes from a Punjabi family. She speaks a little bit of English because she wants to compete in beauty pageants. The boy is also from a small town and is eager to advance in life.
The multi-hyphenated musician Gulzar, who was born Sampoorna Singh Kalra, has given the country a new lexicon to love and live with. In the beginning, he travelled with Mera Gora Rang Lei Le (Bandini, 1963). He has received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Sahitya Akademi Award, and the Padma Bhushan Award. Gulzar has received 21 Filmfare Awards, five National Film Awards, a Grammy Award, and an Oscar for his song Jai Ho from Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire.
Hu Tu Tu, Asoka, Fiza, Aks, Leela, Filhaal, Saathiya, Maqbool, Pinjar, Raincoat, Paheli, Guru, Omkara, Yuvraaj, Firaaq, Kaminey, Ishqiya, Veer, Haider, Drishyam, and Kill Dill are just a few of the well-known movies for which Gulzar has written the lyrics.
