Kim Namjoon, the leader of BTS and better known by his stage moniker RM, turned 28 today (in Korean culture, he is actually 29 years old). RM joined BTS in 2010 and made his debut in 2013 alongside group members Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. However, did you know that RM formerly performed as Runch Randa, an underground rapper, before signing with BigHit Music? In 2020, the rapper made a similar revelation.
RM had mentioned, “MapleStory was a game that inspired me the most,” on the first episode of BTS’ collaboration, The MapleStory Originals, Once Upon a Time. I changed my name to RM, something that many of you are unaware of. I used to go by the name Runch Randa, but now I go by the name RM. Now, how did I come up with the name Runch Randa? “
I shared a MapleStory account with that guy, and the character’s name was Runch Randa. I was thinking of a name and just went with that, he added, “and I had a friend back then who educated me about rap, about Garion, Eminem, and Outsider.
Jimin made the joke that BTS is a result of MapleStory as RM ended his tale. Jin remarked, “You must have created that character at lunch,” as the other members came up with their own explanations on why RM selected that name.
RM collaborated with other underground rappers on songs published under the name Runch Randa. At the audition, RM ran into Sleepy from Untouchable, who introduced him to producer Bang Si-Hyuk and asked him to try out for BigHit Entertainment (now called BigHit Music). The seven-member group’s first recruit, RM, has been in charge of BTS ever since. He first went by the stage name Rap Monster until switching to RM in 2017. BTS has a record of album releases and accolades from all around the world.
His birthday was celebrated by the BTS official Twitter account sharing a photo of him along with a message wishing him a “happy birthday.” Earlier on Sunday, RM posted multiple images of the rapper to Instagram Stories along with the caption, “Sent by (my) pal. I’m grateful.”
