With 83,876 new infections, daily Covid-19 tally falls below 1-lakh mark

India’s daily Covid-19 count fell below the 100,000 mark on Monday as a third wave of the virus receded in the country. According to the Federal Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s daily health bulletin, 83,876 cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours. The total number is now 42,272,014.

The figures further put the number of related deaths at 895, bringing the death toll to 502,874.

Active cases fell to 11,08,938 after a 24-hour drop of 1,16,073 cases. Active cases accounted for 2.62% of total infections.

According to the Ministry of Health, the positivity rate has dropped to 7.25%, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has improved to 96.19%. The weekly positive rate was 9.18%.

It said the number of people who recovered from the disease surged to 4,06,60,202, while the case fatality rate stood at 1.19%.

Driven by the nationwide Covid-19 vaccination drive, the country has so far surpassed 1.6963 crore cumulative doses.

Many state and federal territory administrators have decided to reopen educational institutions amid a decline in cases.

Most state governments began reopening schools and colleges from Monday (February 7), but for seniors – grades 9 to 12. However, some states have also ordered the reopening of schools in lower grades.

Meanwhile, the central government requires its employees at all levels to come to the office in person, without any exemptions. Union Minister Jitendra Singh called a review meeting on Sunday before deciding to restore 100 per cent attendance for his staff, the union’s Ministry of Personnel, Public Complaints and Pensions said.
