Virat Kohli’s announcement on Saturday that he had decided to step down as Test captain sent shockwaves across the Indian cricket fraternity. The 33-year-old made the announcement just a day after he led the team to a three-Test series against South Africa. Kohli ended his tenure as India’s most successful captain in the longest game format.

Following the announcement, speculation abounded about Kohli’s successor taking the leadership role. Many have touted Rohit Sharma – who has already been named as India’s limited captain – as India’s next Test captain.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar named young wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant as his role choice, with India World Cup winner all-rounder Yuvraj Singh expressing his agreement.

“Absolutely! Read the game behind the stump,” Yuvraj wrote on Twitter, responding to Gavaskar’s comments.

“If you ask me, and I’m still staying, I’ll consider Rishabh Pant as the next India captain,” Garvaska said on Saturday.

“Just for one reason, like Rohit Sharma was named captain of the Mumbai Indians when Ricky Ponting went down, look at how his batting has changed since then. Suddenly, the responsibility of being captain has him taking those 30-year-old, Beautiful cameos at 40s and 50s turned into hundreds, 150s and 200s.”
