A day after two men shot at the car of the All India Parliament (AIMIM) chairman and Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi at a toll booth in the Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, the centre awarded him the “Z” category, VIP-level sources said, by the centre Security cover managed by the Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Ovaci’s security was reviewed by intelligence agencies after Thursday’s shooting, and the federal interior ministry decided to provide him with security cover.
Under the “Z” category cover, Owaisi will be guarded by 35-40 commandos in rotation in three shifts, with an escort and pilot vehicle in his convoy.
There were no casualties in Thursday’s attack as multiple bullets hit Owaisi’s car. Police said they had arrested one of the shooters. The Lok Sabha MP returned to Delhi after a door-to-door campaign for his party’s candidate in the Kittor parliamentary constituency in the Meerut district on Thursday night when his car was attacked.
The CRPF is the largest paramilitary force in the country, with more than 50 dignitaries including Home Minister Amit Shah, Transport Minister Nitingad Kari, Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Businessman Mukesh Ambani also had CRPF security, but he paid for it.
