Recently , the Union Cabinet cleared a new National Education Policy (NEP) proposing sweeping changes in school and higher education.

What purpose does an NEP serve?

An NEP is a comprehensive framework to guide the development of education in the country. The need for a policy was first felt in 1964 when Congress MP Siddheshwar Prasad criticised the then government for lacking a vision and philosophy for education. The same year, a 17-member Education Commission, headed by then UGC Chairperson D S Kothari, was constituted to draft a national and coordinated policy on education. Based on the suggestions of this Commission, Parliament passed the first education policy in 1968.

How it will impact India’s private coaching industry?

The private coaching industry in India earns a revenue of Rs 24,000 crore a year. It’s dominated by unorganised players who run hole-in-the-wall tuition centres in urban areas. As per the Global Education Census Report 2018, 55% of school students in India have a private tutor outside the school.

Aakash Chaudhry, director Aakash Educational Services, says that the coaching industry will get affected. “Because it’s too woven around numbers and cramming. If the government wants to move away from rote learning then we need to adapt too. Only those players will prosper who will train their teachers in the new courses and approach,” says Chaudhry. “Right now, most players in this space are focused on science and maths, and exam scores,” he adds.
