Anti-Covid Drug Developed by DRDO Cleared For Emergency Use
The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved the emergency use of anti-Covid drugs developed by DRDO.
The Ministry of Defense said on Saturday that this drug, taken by mouth, has been allowed to be used in the treatment of patients with moderate to severe symptoms of corona virus.
The ministry reported that clinical trials revealed that 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) drugs help the hospitalized patients recover faster, as well as reduce dependence of excess oxygen.
The drug has been developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the prestigious laboratory of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) in association with Dr. Reddy Laboratory of Hyderabad.
The ministry said that 2-DG medicine comes in a packet in the form of powder, it has to be dissolved in water and drink. “On May 1, DCGI approved this claim as an emergency method to treat patients with moderate and severe symptoms of Covid-19,” the ministry said in a statement. It can be prepared in large quantities in the country due to its conformity with normal molecules and glucose.
The ministry stated that the 2-DG drug of DRDO accumulates in the virus-infected cell and inhibits the growth of the virus. Working selectively on a virus-infected cell is what makes this medicine special.
