Karnataka halts decision to sell 3,667 acres of land to JSW Steel
The Karnataka government’s cabinet on Thursday adjourned the decision to sell 3,667 acres of land to JSW Steel Ltd in Ballari district in view of protests from within the ruling BJP and pending cases in the courts.
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Basavaraj Bommai said, “The decision to sell land to JSW Steel in the last cabinet meeting has not been confirmed in today’s cabinet meeting, so the previous decision on the matter will remain pending.”
After the cabinet meeting, he told the media persons here that the decision taken in the previous cabinet meeting will not be implemented after the decision of the cabinet is currently withheld.
He clarified, “A lot of cases are in the courts and appeals have been made in the Supreme Court as well. A public interest litigation has also been filed in the High Court, on the basis of which several notices have been issued. In view of this situation, a decision will be taken in this regard after a few days. “
Earlier on 26 April, in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, the decision to sell 3,667 acres of land in Ballari district to JSW Steel was agreed. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, strongly opposed this decision of the former state government while in opposition.
It is noteworthy that the Congress-JDS coalition government had decided to sell 3,667 acres of leased land to JSW Steel in 2019. However, in view of the internal protests and outside protests, the cabinet once again discussed the issue and decided to refer it to the cabinet sub-committee.
