The main court of the National Green Court (NGT) recently ordered the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) and other officials to implement the Vishwamitri River Action Plan, which includes demarcation, planting and preparations to maintain the integrity of the river .

According to the restoration plan, this would also include the removal of all unauthorized structures.

The NGT noted that the river consists of floodplains, tributaries, gaps along and around the river bank, as well as soil and vegetation on both sides. Therefore, it is the river’s natural system to prevent flooding and provide habitat for many species.

Therefore, the action plan must restore the integrity of the river.

The NGT noted that the Vishwamitri River in Vadodara is among the 351 polluted river chains recognized by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and was also widely considered in another court petition hearing as part of the restoration.

The development of the Sama to Harni bridge was important for the connectivity of the two areas to reduce travel time. And that matter was pending before the Gujarat High Court and the acquisition was suspended.

The petitioner in the case, Rohit Prajapati from the Environmental Protection Committee, said that he has increased the need to implement the Vishwamitri River Action Plan. Interested citizens and professionals are willing to work closely with the authorities on the action plan.
