NMCG, BUIDCO, Adani sign concession agreement for STP in Bhagalpur
The National Clean Ganges Mission (NMCG), Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Co., Ltd. (BUIDCO) and M/s signed a tripartite franchise agreement today. Adani Enterprises Limited has a joint venture with Hungary’s Organica Technológiák Zrt. to develop a sewage treatment plant (STP) for Bhagalpur under a mixed annuity PPP model.
The total cost of the contract is 385.09 crore. NMCG Director General Rajiv Ranjan Mishra and NMCG ED (Project) Ashok Kumar Singh attended the meeting, as did representatives of BUIDCO and franchisees. The agreement was signed by NMCG Director (Project) Vinod Kumar, BUIDCO Executive Engineer Amlendu Kumar Ranjan, and authorized signatory and franchisee Mr. Akchhyakumar Singh. The project aims to eliminate the untreated sewage flowing into the Ganges from Bagarpur city, thereby reducing the pollution load of the river.
NMCG approved the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP) with a total capacity of 45 MLD, which includes the development of interception and diversion (I&D) structure, I&D network laying, sewage pumping station, including operation and maintenance for 15 years. The project also aims to solve the existing sewage problems in the town and the resulting sewage pollution from the Ganges River.
Bagalpur is a municipal company town located on the Ganges Basin plain at 141 feet above sea level in Bihar, India. It is the second largest city after Patna, Bihar. In addition to Patna, under the Namami Gange plan, important towns in the Bhagalpur district, namely Bhagalpur, Sultanganj, Kahalgaon and Naugachia have also received STP projects. The Ganges section from Sultanganj to Kahalgaon belongs to the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary, with a total length of 60 kilometers.
Therefore, in order to maintain the habitat of the Ganges dolphins and other aquatic animals, it is very important to reduce the pollution of this section of the Ganges. This will ensure that the rich biodiversity of the area is maintained. The project will reduce the pollution generated by the city with significant and strict performance standards, and ensure that the habitat of the Ganges dolphins is no longer polluted.
