Nirav Modi’s plea on dismissing fraud allegations rejected by US court

On October 15, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York rejected his and his associates’ request to dismiss the fraud charges against them. This was another setback for the fugitive diamond dealer Nirav Modi. Basically, Firestar Diamond, Inc., Fantasy, Inc. and A. Jaffe, Inc.-three U.S. companies indirectly owned by Modi, sought protection under the bankruptcy law approximately one month after the Punjab National Bank filed a lawsuit against him and other entities Large-scale bank fraud. After failing to sell the debtor’s assets, the court appointed Richard Levin as the trustee of the aforementioned company in mid-2018.

Levine filed a lawsuit in March 2019 against Nirav Modi, Mihir Bhansali, who is the director and chief executive officer of these companies, and Ajay Gandhi, who is their chief financial officer. The company and its assets have a 6-year “extensive international fraud, money laundering and embezzlement scheme”.

In Wandsworth Prison in the United Kingdom, Modi was accused of being the main beneficiary of the fraudulent issuance of a pledge, which was part of a conspiracy to defraud PNB of up to Rs 13,570 crore. The court held that the complainant’s argument was reasonable.

“Although the revised complaint described bank fraud against PNB, it also accused the defendant of direct fraud against the debtor.”

In a clear prosecution against Modi, it added: “The defendant’s obstructive behavior apparently contributed to the ongoing fraudulent plan at the time, rather than merely covering up the previously completed plan, thereby satisfying the continuity requirements for the establishment of the model. RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations).” The US court instructed the trustee Richard Levine to submit a proposed order and serve copies of it to the lawyers of all three defendants.

Snow White trailer: Wonder Woman Gal Gadot turns Evil Stepmother to Rachel Zegler’s Disney princess. Watch

Snow White trailer: Directed by Marc Webb, and co-written by Greta Gerwig, the live-action film has been adapted from Disney’s 1937 animated classic.

After playing Wonder Woman for so many years, Gal Gadot seems to be entering her Evil Stepmother era. The trailer of Marc Webb’s live-action adaptation of Disney’s classic Princess tale, Snow White, shows Gal playing to the gallery as the conniving Evil Queen. What’s in the trailer?

The trailer starts with Snow White (played by Rachel Zegler) recalling how it was her father’s kingdom, but after his death, his stepmother, the Evil Queen took over the reins. The switch in power relegated Snow White to the sidelines. Also, Evil Queen’s Magic Mirror telling her that not her, but her stepdaughter is “the fairest of them all” further makes the situation worse for Snow White.

On a friendly advice, in order to escape the clutches of her evil stepmother, Snow White retreats to the forest, where she encounters the Seven Dwarves. She soon teams up with them to bring positive changes to the forest. The trailer ends with the Evil Queen disguised as an old woman, offering a poisonous apple to Snow White.

Gal Gadot as Evil Queen

While several internet users are lauding Gal Gadot’s casting as the Evil Queen, many feel she won’t be able to match the tall order set by predecessors like Charlize Theron in Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman. “I mean she’s more accurate to the animation Evil Queen than they were. I agree they are great in their respective roles but we haven’t seen the full scope of Gal’s version yet. I know people don’t like her(which I totally understand) but it will be interesting to see her version,” a user defended the casting.

This isn’t the first time Snow White is getting online heat. It also ignited chatter for the casting of Latina actor Rachel Zegler as the titular character, originally described “as white as snow.” The film also received flak for not casting dwarf actors as the Seven Dwarfs.

Snow White is slated to release in cinemas on March 21, 2025. It’s co-written by Erin Cressida Wilson and Greta Gerwig, after the blockbuster success of her directorial Barbie last year.
