VR Diploma: IIT Madras to Start Virtual Reality Course in 2022

Starting next year, Indian engineering students will be able to learn and train themselves in virtual reality (VR), which is the next frontier in the emerging technology field, Madras Institute of Technology, India. The leading research institute and the Japanese company Monolith have teamed up to launch an advanced diploma course on VR for the first time in India.

The course will provide both online and offline methods. For those who don’t know, VR is a computer-generated environment that looks real and makes users feel immersed in their surroundings. The goal of this course is to enable individuals to master new technologies to build capabilities and meet industry needs. IIT Madras said in a statement that there is a growing demand for highly skilled professionals in the fields of VR, augmented reality (AR), extended reality (XR) and haptic technology.

The first batch will start in January 2022, and students can apply for the program starting in November. The agency stated that 50 students will be admitted to the course each year. Anyone with an engineering course, including students currently studying for an engineering degree anywhere in India, can apply. Those who want to improve themselves can also apply. The demand for VR professionals in IT companies, animation industry, architecture, engineering, healthcare, and media production continues to grow. “Virtual reality is essentially a practical interdisciplinary course.

Both IIT Madras and Monolith regard this as a challenge, and they are offering this course in India for the first time. “Professor M. Manivannan, Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras said. IIT Madras and Japan’s Monolith research and training laboratory recently signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation. The Virtual Reality and Tactile Center of Excellence will coordinate the course.

Monolith Director Yathirajan Varadharajan said: “Experiential and immersive technologies are rapidly evolving and changing key industries, from architecture and engineering to healthcare and media production.” Varadharajan added that various studies and research papers on immersive technologies indicate it It has the potential to increase the global economy by US$1.5 trillion (approximately Rs 112,376.25 billion) by adding 23 million jobs, including adding existing jobs or creating new jobs by 2030.
