Army chief Gen MM Naravane takes over as chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee

The Army Chief of Staff Manoj Mukund Naravane will serve as the chairman of the Chief of Staff Committee. This is a stopgap measure to fill the post vacant due to the unfortunate death of the Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Defense, General Bipin Lavat. These officials are familiar with developments.

An official familiar with the development said that India’s first Chief of Staff General Bin Rawat was killed in the crash of an Indian Air Force Mi-17 V5 helicopter in Kunur District on December 8th in Tamil Nadu with his wife and 11 armed forces.

A person familiar with the matter told the news agency PTI that General Naravane has been appointed as the chairman of the committee because he is the highest of the three service leaders.

IAF Chief Air Force Chief of Staff VR Chaudhari and Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar took over their positions on September 30 and November 30.

The Committee of Chiefs of Staff (CoSC) met on Tuesday to express condolences to General Lavat and others who were killed in the crash of the Coonoor helicopter. The only survivor of the accident, Captain Valen Singh, was injured in a military hospital in Bangalore on Wednesday.

When General Lawatt went to the Wellington Defense Service Staff College to give a speech, the helicopter crashed.
