The Minister of State for Defense informed the Parliament on Friday that the Indian Air Force’s Russian-made Mi-17V5 helicopter has had four accidents in the past five years, resulting in 21 deaths, including the recent crash of General Coonoor Bipin Rawat in Tamil Nadu. His wife and 13 defense personnel died.
From the perspective of all military helicopter accidents, 15 military helicopter accidents that have occurred since March 2017 have resulted in 31 deaths. According to PTI News Agency, the list of crashes he provided began with the Indian Air Force Cheetah helicopter accident on March 15, 2017, and there were no casualties. According to the data provided by the minister in Lok Sabha, the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force each had 7 helicopters in accident during this period, while the Navy only had one. On August 3, in Rudra near Pathankot, the minister informed the House of Representatives that there were no restrictions on helicopters flying over the water. However, operations on large areas of water are restricted. The most recent crash is being investigated by a tri-service investigation team, which will complete the investigation within two weeks, the report said. Of the 14 passengers on board, 13 including Maduri Karavat, wife of General Biping Lavat, died on the same day. The captain of the Indian Air Force Battalion, Valensingh, fought for a week and died of his injuries on December 15. According to data from the Ministry of National Defense, the helicopter did not issue a distress signal. It took off from Suluer Air Force Base at 11:48 am and is scheduled to arrive at Wheeling Air Force Base at 12:15 pm. At around 12:07 noon, Suluer Air Force Base lost contact with the helicopter.
