Delhi: Cold wave conditions abate, air quality in ‘very poor’ zone
The cold wave in Delhi has eased because the city recorded a minimum temperature of 7 degrees Celsius on Monday, and the 7 am Air Quality Index (AQI) of 391, which is in a “very poor” zone.
The AQI on Sunday is 404, which means “serious”. Low temperature and firecrackers on New Year’s Eve together led to the deterioration of air quality in the capital.
An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 are considered “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 are considered “medium”, 201 and 300 are considered “bad”, and 301 and 400 are considered “very good” Poor”, 401 and 500 are “serious”.
On Sunday, the lowest temperature recorded in Delhi was 4.2 degrees Celsius, which was 4 degrees below normal, and the highest temperature was 22.4 degrees Celsius, which was 1 degree above normal.
When the minimum temperature is 4.5 degrees or more below the normal temperature, or drops to 4 degrees or less, a cold wave is declared. Delhi recorded cold wave conditions on December 30 and 31. The lowest temperature this season was 3.2 degrees Celsius on December 20. It is expected that there will be light to moderate fog in the area on Monday morning, and the maximum temperature may hover around 19 degrees Celsius. Later this week, a new western disturbance is expected to bring light showers.
