Blow for Bengal’s Ranji Trophy preparations as 7 members test positive for COVID-19

Seven members of the Bangladesh Ranji Trophy team tested positive for COVID-19, and their preparations fell into chaos a few days before they started participating in the country’s premier competition.
Bangladesh, which is placed in Group B along with Vidarbha, Rajasthan, Kerala, Haryana and Tripura, will start its campaign against Tripura in Bangalore on January 13.
“Considering the current pandemic, the Bangladesh Cricket Association (CAB) has conducted RTPCR tests on all Bangladeshi cricketers as a safety measure,” CAB Secretary Snehasish Ganguly said in a statement on Sunday evening.
“The results came out and it was found that some players tested positive. CAB is taking all necessary precautions and actions in this regard.”
According to sources, six Bangladeshi players-Sudip Chatterjee, Anustup Majumdar, Kazi Junaid Saifi, Geet Puri, Pradipta Pramanik, Surajit Yadav-and assistant coach Sourasish Lahiri were infected with the virus.
On Sunday, the seven players attended the team warm-up match held at the second campus of Jadavpur University in Salt Lake City.
“The details of the strain have yet to be determined. They are quarantining in accordance with the agreement,” the source said.
This progress means that their two-day warm-up match against Mumbai led by Prithvi Shaw in the CCFC stands was cancelled from Tuesday.
Whether they will participate in the second warm-up match remains to be seen.
CAB also decided to suspend all local tournaments currently in progress and called for an emergency Supreme Council meeting to be held on Tuesday to review the current COVID-19 situation.
CAB Chairman Avishek Dalmiya said in a joint statement with Secretary Snehasish: “Before the meeting, taking into account the current epidemic situation and recent craze, CAB decided to suspend all local tournaments currently underway.”
“CAB also took immediate steps to vaccinate registered players in the 15-18 age group,” it added.
According to government data released on Sunday, the number of daily coronavirus infections in West Bengal in the city increased 14 times in a week.
The state recorded 6,153 infections on Sunday, including 3,194 infections in Kolkata. On December 26, it was 544 and 219, respectively.
According to government announcements, eight people died from the coronavirus on Sunday, compared with nine deaths the day before.

Gambhir acknowledges that his “sole regret in seven years of captaincy” is Suryakumar Yadav: “KKR failed to recognise his potential.”

Throughout his incredible career with the Mumbai Indians since 2018, Suryakumar Yadav has become a household name. He has established himself as a vital member of the batting lineup and is seen as the team’s future leader. He was able to establish himself in the Indian white-ball team and get to the top of the IC batting rankings in the format because to his valiant efforts at MI. But before he was let away, Suryakumar was a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders lineup from 2014 to 2017. When former captain Gautam Gambhir reflects on the two IPL titles won by KKR during that time, he named the star player from India his greatest regret.

KKR featured Suryakumar Yadav from 2014 to 2017.

In 2012, Suryakumar began his IPL career with the Mumbai Indians, appearing in just one match before being cut loose the following year. He was signed by KKR in 2014, and he won the championship in his first campaign there. The right-handed batter scored 608 runs in 54 games during his four-year tenure with the team, although the majority of those runs were scored as a lower middle order hitter.

In an interview with Sportskeeda on Monday, Gambhir said that his biggest regret as KKR captain is that he failed to recognise Suryakumar’s ability or his ideal batting position in the lineup.

Finding and showcasing the greatest potential is the responsibility of a leader. If there’s one thing I regret from my seven years as captain, it’s that neither I nor the squad were able to fully utilise Suryakumar Yadav. And combinations were the key to the cause. At No. 3, you may only play one person. As a leader, you also need to consider the other ten players in the starting lineup. Although he was just as excellent at No. 7, he would have been far more effective at No. 3, he said.

Gambhir went on to praise Suruyakumar for being a team player, citing the reason behind his appointment as the team’s vice-captain in 2015.

He was a team player as well. A good player may be anyone, but becoming a team player takes skill. Playing him at No. 6 or 7 or benching him, he was constantly grinning and eager to contribute to the squad. He went on, “That’s why we named him vice captain.”
