Delhi To Impose Weekend Curfew Amid Rise In Omicron Cases
Sources today said after a meeting on the new restrictions that due to the increasing number of new coronary pneumonia cases, Delhi may impose a weekend curfew.
The Delhi Disaster Management Authority met to decide to formulate new restrictions in Delhi. The surge means new restrictions under the color-coded Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
With the positive rate higher than 5% for two consecutive days, Delhi faces “red alert” restrictions, such as a total curfew banning basic services, closing non-essential shops, shopping centers and salons, and more restrictions on public transportation, weddings and funerals.
Delhi reported a rising positive rate — for every 100 people who tested positive — 4,099 new cases were reported in 24 hours on Monday. The positive rate in Delhi was 6.46%, the highest level since May.
Since December 29, the capital has been in a “yellow alert” state. Cinemas and gyms are closed, and shops are allowed on a parity basis. Metro trains and buses can only run at half the capacity. According to a senior source from the Ministry of Health, by mid-January, there may be 20-25,000 cases per day in Delhi, and the number of hospitalizations may increase.
A key source from the Federal Ministry of Health told NDTV that based on the current infection rate, Delhi may report 8-9,000 cases a day before January 8. “By January 5, Delhi may have 20-25,000 cases a day,” the source said, warning not to underestimate the surge in Omicron.
