Covid scare: Over 300 doctors test positive in four days in Maharashtra
As many as 338 residents from different hospitals have tested positive for coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the past four days in Maharashtra.
The information was shared by Dr Avinash Dahiphale, President of the Maharashtra Resident Physicians Association.
During the latest comeback of Covid-19 and the outbreak of its highly contagious Omicron variant, which was first detected in South Africa last year, large numbers of healthcare professionals across the country have contracted the virus.
Earlier this week, at least 50 doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi were quarantined after some tested positive for Covid-19 and others showed symptoms of the disease. Over the past week, more than 23 doctors at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital have also tested positive.
At Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, 45 healthcare workers, including 38 doctors, ended up contracting Covid-19 over the past few days, an ANI report said. Meanwhile, authorities at AIIMS have cancelled the remainder of the winter break from January 5 to January 10 for all faculty and staff, asking them “effectively immediately”.
At the Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, 196 healthcare workers, including doctors, contracted the coronavirus over a 10-day period between December 26 and January 4, hospital authorities told The Hindustan Times on Wednesday. Virus.
The dire situation comes as India crossed the 100,000 mark (1,17,100 to be exact) on Friday in new Covid-19 cases, with 302 deaths.
Maharashtra remains one of the hardest-hit states in India, with a surge in daily caseloads and more than 36,000 infections, according to the latest available update.
The state is also a major contributor to India’s Omicron statistics, with 876 confirmed cases since the new variant was first detected in the country.
