Deepika Padukone opens up on ‘difficult’ Covid-19 battle: ‘I was unrecognisable, my mind wasn’t working’

Deepika Padukone was among the several people who contracted Covid-19 during the second wave last year. The actor and her family–including father Prakash, mother Ujjala, and sister Anisha–all tested positive in April 2021. In a recent interaction, Deepika opened up on how the illness made her ‘physically unrecognisable’.

Even though she managed to recover from Covid-19 in a few weeks, Deepika took a two-month break before resuming work. The actor has now admitted it was because her ‘mind wasn’t working’ and that it was a ‘very, very difficult phase’ for her.

In a recent interview with Film Companion, Deepika shared how Covid-19 affected her physically. “Life after Covid changed for me because physically, I was unrecognisable completely… I think (due to) the medication I was given, the steroids that I was put on. So Covid in itself was weird, your body feels different, your mind feels different,” she said.

The actor added that it wasn’t the disease that affected her the most, but the aftermath of it, which forced her to take a small vacation. She added: “I think it’s okay when I’m sick, but after that, I need to take two months off because my brain isn’t working. It’s a very, very difficult stage for me.”

Deepika is currently gearing up for her next release Gehraiyaan, which is directed by Shakun Batra. The film, which also stars Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, and Dhairya Karwa, is set to release on Amazon Prime Video on February 11.

Speaking of the film, director Shakun Batra said in a statement: “For me, Gehraiyaan is more than a film. It is a journey into complex relationships, a mirror to understand modern adult relationships, Learn how we navigate the maze of feelings and emotions, and how every step and decision we make affects our lives and the lives of those around us.”

Zakir Khan’s comedy-shayari programme will take Kapil Sharma’s place on TV.

After The Kapil Sharma Show aired on television for the last year, the comedian moved to streaming services in 2024 with The Great Indian Kapil Show. Actor Huma Qureshi was a permanent visitor on the TV show Madness Machayenge-India Ko Hassayenge, which briefly filled the hole created by the departure of the former show. But it didn’t quite click with the public, and according to recent rumours, the channel has added comedian Zakir Khan to help fill the void with a new programme.

Comedy and shayari will be mixed together in Zakir Khan’s presentation.

We now know some exclusive information about the show, such as its schedule and format. According to a source with direct knowledge of the situation, “Zakir’s show will feature a trademark Zakir blend of humour and shayari. With this programme, the comedian hopes to reach a larger audience. He has already developed a following of people who identify with his shayarana side. Madness Machayenge is now airing and is most likely coming to an end. Zakir’s television programme is scheduled to premiere in August. Bollywood visitors will appear on the broadcast in addition to Zakir’s shayari and comedy, much like it used to happen on Kapil’s show.” This is Khan’s second television appearance following his work on the fifth season of The As a mentor in the Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2017. In addition, he hosted the comedic non-fiction programme Farzi Mushaira on OTT, combining humour and shayari with well-known guests.

Recently, filming for Kapil’s OTT show came to an end, and there were rumours that this was because of the show’s poor viewership. The cast of Heeramandi, American singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, and actors Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, among others, were disclosed in a video that the crew published to refute the rumours. Regarding Madness Machayenge, the television programme that took Kapil’s position, director Karan Johar blasted it for his repulsive impersonation on the show. The full guest list for Zakir’s programme has not yet been announced.
