Army Day 2022: World’s largest Khadi national flag to be displayed in Jaisalmer today
The world’s largest flag made of Khadi, the “Commemorative Flag”, will be displayed in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, a day earlier, on the occasion of the 74th Army Day, which is celebrated on Saturday, according to the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises.
The Khadi tricolor will be on display at the India-Pakistan border in Longewala, west of the Jaisalmer district. Longewala was the site of the iconic Battle of Longewala in 1971, fought during the war between the two neighbouring countries that year.
The MSME Ministry noted that this public display at Longewala will be the fifth such display of the flag, which was inaugurated in Leh on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti last year. “Its second public display was at Hinton Air Force Base on Air Force Day on October 8, 2021. The third was at Red Fort on October 21, when the country completed 1 billion Covid-19 vaccinations. On December 4, it was displayed near the Gateway of India on Navy Day,” the ministry detailed.
Regarding the size of the flag, the statement states that it is 225 feet long, 150 feet wide, and weighs about 1,400 kilograms, while the central Ashoka chakra is 30 feet in diameter.
It added that the “Commemorative Flag” was created by the Khadi and Village Industries Council (KVIC) to commemorate the ongoing “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of India’s independence from British rule.
