Google Camera, Lens Issue of Misreading QR Codes Fixed via Update: Report
Google is reportedly updating its Camera and Lens apps to fix an issue where users couldn’t scan QR codes correctly. The report highlights these issues, noting that users of Google Pixel smartphones on Android 12 are facing the issue along with users of some OnePlus smartphones. Many users reported that links embedded in QR codes misbehaved on Google Pixel smartphones. Additionally, the calendar’s QR code also incorrectly translates data when scanned from a Google Pixel smartphone.
According to a report by Heise (German), Google Pixel smartphone users are having trouble scanning QR codes. The issue is only faced on Pixel smartphones running Android 12. However, the report also mentions that some OnePlus smartphones running Android 11 and Android 12 are also facing issues with QR codes. According to the report, the Google Camera and Lens apps on the aforementioned devices were not scanning QR codes properly.
Links embedded in QR codes reportedly face three problems. The first bug mentioned in the report was a URL containing a period. It mentions that links such as https://www.fooco.at/hello have been changed to https://www.foo.co.at/hello even though the link embedded in the QR code does not contain a period. Also, some links that contain country codes like .au, .br, .hu, etc. are also affected by this bug.
Another bug mentioned in the report was the removal of certain characters in the URL. For example, links ending in .cat are sometimes shortened to .ca, and the report mentions that it can happen with other domains as well.
The third bug mentioned in the report was obfuscating numbers in URLs. If the link contains a number like https://www6.rbc.com, the Camera app redirects the user to https://www.6.rbc.com.
A report by 9to5Google mentions that Google has released fixes for these bugs. A server-wide update reportedly fixes issues with the Google Lens app, while an update for Google Camera has been released on the Play Store to patch those issues. The report also mentions that the QR code-related issues have not been fully resolved as Google Pixel smartphones cannot convert data for the calendar. This issue pushes the date back by a month while also ignoring the timezone in some cases. According to reports, the issue has not yet been resolved.

Surfaces of the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra with Snapdragon 8S Gen 3
Early this week, renders of the Edge 50 Fusion appeared, and Motorola has previously stated that the Edge 50 Pro will ship on April 3. The highest-end smartphone in the Edge 50 series, the Edge 50 Ultra, has now been shown in renders.
The phone is depicted in the renderings in peach fuzz and black with a vegan leather finish, while sisal, a beige color, will have a brushed surface. As opposed to the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 in the Pro variant and the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 in the Edge 50 Fusion, the phone is reportedly powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC.
A 50MP primary camera, an ultra-wide camera, and a periscope telephoto camera with a 5x optical zoom are all included in the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra’s feature set. Additionally, there is a triple LED flash on the right side and a laser autofocus feature above the periscope lens.
Although the phone’s display, battery, and charging specifications are yet unknown, the Edge 50 Pro is said to include 12GB of RAM and support both 50W and 125W wired and wireless charging.
It is anticipated that this will launch as the Motorola X50 Ultra in China. It is unclear if the India launch may be expected on the same day as the rest of the Edge 50 series phones, even if this is scheduled to go official on April 3.
