Gehraiyaan movie review: Deepika Padukone outdoes herself in Shakun Batra’s film but it isn’t enough

A twisted tale of love, lies, trust, betrayal, complex relationships, and the dark reality of moving on, Gehraiyaan is an intimate film. While this isn’t the first time Bollywood has shown infidelity on-screen, the narrative has certainly matured, with characters being allowed to go deeper beyond simple appeal.

From 2006’s Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna, where many viewers couldn’t understand the concept of finding love after marriage, to now in 2022, films like Gehraiyaan delve into why relationships are deadlocked, it’s been a journey of progress. Yes, also related.

Starring Deepika Padukone, Ananya Panday, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Dhairya Karwa, Shakun Batra’s Gehraiyaan is a modern love story where it’s only natural to fall out of love and find it again elsewhere. Alisha (Deepika) and Karan (Dhairya) have been together for six years and they plan to meet her cousin Tia (Ananya) and fiance Zain from Los Angeles. After a few words and sweet glances, Alisha and Zain are immediately attracted to each other.

In her own world, Tia doesn’t know anything about what’s going on behind the scenes, as does Karan, who’s working on getting his book published and running a family with Alyssa. In all this, lies are revealed and some are hidden.

While the trailer reveals a lot about the movie’s plot, I’m glad it retains just as much curiosity, suspense, and twists as the story unfolds.

Shakun’s story, which he co-authored with Sumit Roy, Ayesha Devitre and Yash Sahai, has its heart in the right place but faltering in many places. You often wonder, “why,” “how,” and “is that so?” Some questions are left unanswered, and some are thought to be categorized. The characters in this movie go on with their lives so easily without knowing the real conspiracy. Despite these flaws, Gehraiyaan reveals the complexities of relationships and the extent to which people can go to save or destroy them.

There’s a lot of hustle and bustle about Gehraiyaan appointing an intimate director for the scene between Siddhant and Deepika’s characters. Do we really need it? Well, you know it when you watch the movie. Sadly, I didn’t feel any spark between Deepika and Sidhunt in those specific scenes, even though Deepika was great and comfortable throughout.

Deepika seems to have a knack for picking complex characters and portraying them with such conviction. Her extremely nuanced performance in Gehraiyaan reminds me of Veronica in Cocktail and Tara in Tamasha. As Alyssa, she is clear-headed and ambitious, but also experiences her moments of weakness and vulnerability.
