Punjabi actor-activist Deep Sidhu, accused in Red Fort violence case, dies in road accident

Born on April 2, 1984 to a Jatt Sikh family in Sri Muktsar Sahib district, Punjab, Sidhu started his acting career with Ramta Jogi in 2015 at the age of 31. But he rose to fame when the 2018 film Jora Das Nimbria was released. The sequel to the March 2020 film Jorah: Chapter Two.

Sidhu is also an activist, linked to the 2021 Republic Day violence. Sidhu performed a Facebook live broadcast as he raised his pennant from the walls of the Red Fort. In the video, Sidhu said in Punjabi: “We just raised the Nishan Sahib flag at the Red Fort while exercising our democratic right to protest.”

Since then, Sidhu has been arrested twice. Following his arrest in February 2021, police told a Delhi court that Sidhu was the “main thug and instigator” of the Red Fort incident and that he “incited people…to incite violence” and was seen in a video to him with “sword, stick and flag”.

However, the court granted his bail on April 16, saying the prosecution had tried to follow his example because he was popular, but this “has the potential to lead to a miscarriage of justice” and that his continued detention was a violation of his right to life and liberty.

Before his release from prison, he was again detained by Delhi police on April 17 for another FIR against him by the Archaeological Survey of India. However, his lawyers argue that the facts and allegations in both FIRs are the same, as both relate to the violence and destruction inflicted on the Red Fort on January 26. Acknowledging this, the court granted him bail on April 26.
