When Anil Kapoor revealed his love story with wife Sunita: I was totally bekaar

Anil Kapoor and his wife Sunita Kapoor marked their 38th wedding anniversary on Friday. Anil recalled how he met Sunita and what made him fall in love with her in an old interview. Sonam Kapoor, Harsh Vardhan Kapoor, and producer Rhea Kapoor are the couple’s three children.

After a ten-year courtship, Anil and Sunita married on May 19, 1984. After signing the film Meri Jung, which was considered his breakthrough performance, Anil proposed to Sunita. They married the next day in a small ceremony with only about 10 people in attendance.

Anil said in a 2018 interview with Humans Of Bombay that he had no work when he started dating Sunita. “A friend gave Sunita my number so she could prank call me – that’s when I first spoke to her and fell in love with her voice!” he explained. We met at a party a few weeks later, and I was introduced to her…there was something about her that just drew me in. We began chatting and eventually became friends. We used to talk about this other girl I was interested in – do you know if I like her or if she likes me? Then, all of a sudden, she vanished, leaving me heartbroken. As a result of my broken heart, my friendship with Sunita grew stronger.”

“Little did I know that Sunita was the one all along – we organically began dating,” he continued. I didn’t ask her to be my girlfriend like in the movies; we both just knew. She didn’t care who I was or what I did for a living…it didn’t matter to her. I was totally bekaar because she came from a liberal family––a banker’s daughter with a successful modelling career––and she was from a liberal family! Because I lived in Chembur and she lived on Nepean Sea Road, I’d call her and say, “I’ll take the bus and be there in an hour.” ‘No, come fast by taxi!’ she’d scream, and I’d say, ‘Arey, I don’t have money,’ and she’d say, ‘Just come na, I’ll manage,’ and pay for my cab.”

The 62-year-old actor made his feature film debut as a lead in the Telugu film Vamsa Vruksham in 1980, and after a few odd projects, he made his Hindi film debut in a leading role in the love triangle Woh Saat Din in 1983. Meri Jung (1985), Karma (1986), Janbaaz (1986), Aap Ke Saath (1986), Mr. India (1987), Ghar Ho To Aisa (1990), Awaargi (1990), Benaam Badsha (1991), and Virasat (1991) were among his later award-winning films (1997). He’ll next be seen in Jugjugg Jeeyo. Neetu Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, and Kiara Advani will also appear in the film.
