“Kung Fu Panda was a rare movie that got Chinese culture right,” Awkwafina said in an interview.
Animation has featured Awkwafina before. She is a professional rapper as well, and she has provided the voice of several series, including Raya and the Last Dragon, The Little Mermaid, The Angry Birds Movie, and Migration. But the actor finds a deeper, more intimate connection with Jack Black’s character Po when he plays the corsac fox Zhen in Kung Fu Panda 4.
Awkwafina, whose mother is Korean American and her father is Chinese American, was born in New York and raised distant from her native Asia. But Awkwafina was raised by her paternal grandparents after her mother passed away when she was four years old. She was quite close to her grandmother, but she didn’t speak English. Therefore, in order to converse with her, the actor studied Mandarin. Interestingly, her great-grandfather built Lum’s, one of the earliest Chinese restaurants in Queens, after immigrating to the US in the 1940s. In her family, dumplings were just as frequent and revered as they were for Mr. Ping in Kung Fu Panda.
Awkwafina discusses collaborating with Jack Black on Kung Fu Panda 4, the franchise’s benefits for Asian Americans like her, and more in an exclusive interview.
“Watching Kung Fu Panda as an Asian American child growing up… At the time, I felt that there weren’t many films depicting the more traditional cultural customs that I had grown up with in my family. The relationship with his (Po’s) father, the love of dumplings, the filial piety that permeates it, and even the way it portrays the Valley of Peace physically is how I picture a hamlet. Therefore, it was great to see a film that appropriately honored ethnic traditions, Awkwafina explains in a special interview.

Drake’s nightmare: After the drive-by shooting, an intruder was taken into custody at the rapper’s Toronto residence.
In the midst of their ongoing battle with Kendrick Lamar, police investigate the gunshot at Drake’s estate and apprehend the invader the very next day.
While they continue their investigation into the drive-by shooting outside Drake’s house that left a security guard critically injured, Toronto police are interacting with the public. And now there’s a trespass attempt on the rapper’s house.
Drake’s house invader was apprehended by police.
Due to an attempted break-in, Toronto police were summoned to Drake’s house once more the day following the incident.
At around 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 8, authorities apprehended a person who was attempting to enter the Drake’s Bridle Path property without permission.
He was detained by Drake’s personal protection until the cops showed up.
The arrest was conducted in accordance with the Mental Health Act, a police spokeswoman told CityNews Toronto.
The intruder’s name has not been made public.
Growing concern over Drake’s home’s security
The drive-by shooting happened early on Tuesday when unknown gunmen pulled up in a car and started firing at Drake’s house.
The security guy was promptly sent to the hospital after suffering injuries during the incident. The guard’s injuries are not publicly known to the full degree.
After the shooting, Police Duty Inspector Paul Krawczyk addressed the media, saying that while the culprits fled in a car, they “cannot speak to a motive at this time.”
Although they can’t reveal much at this time, police have stated that they “collected some video evidence which captures the incident.”
Krawczyk stated, “We’re dealing with issues with video quality.”
“More information will be available as we gather it and improve our ability to analyse video.”
Although a lot of speculation has been made, the police have not formally linked the shooting to the conflict between Drake and fellow musician Kendrick Lamar.
Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s feud
The media has been focusing on Drake and Lamar’s diss feud for the past several weeks.
When Lamar released the diss tune “Not Like Us,” which featured pictures of Drake’s residence that were obtained from Google Maps, tensions increased. The two then had a series of verbal confrontations, during which Drake released a countertrack titled “The Heart Pt. 6.”
On Google Maps, Lamar’s followers changed the names of places in Drake’s area and added menacing remarks that infuriated the rapper.
