Law Roach, Zendaya’s stylist, criticises the “big 5” companies for their previous rejections, saying, “If you say no, it’ll be no forever.

In a recent episode of The Cutting Room Floor podcast, hosted by Recho Omondi, Law Roach, Zendaya’s longtime personal stylist, disclosed that when she first started her career, major fashion firms turned her down.

“When I would write to Dior, Valentino, Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Chanel, they would all reply, ‘No, try again next year.’” She is very green. Our calendar doesn’t include her,” Roach recollected. “I still own every receipt. Everything is still with me.

With the exception of Valentino, has Zendaya worn any of the “Big 5” on carpets to date?

Designers’ perceptions of clothes did not shift until Zendaya became well-known, making her debut at the Met Gala at the age of eighteen and landing her first American Vogue cover two years later. Law stated that their first hesitation will always be remembered.

She had yet to wear any of those designers when she arrived at American Vogue. He noted that “she still hasn’t,” adding that the Dune actress only started donning Valentino in public after inking a significant deal with the company in 2020.

When Omondi voiced his shock at this, Law said that Zendaya hasn’t worn anything from any of those brands aside from editorial shoots and she won’t be wearing anything from them anytime soon because they rejected her so quickly in the first place.

She has yet to don a Dior outfit on a carpet. She has yet to don a Chanel carpet piece. She still hasn’t worn Gucci on a carpet, regardless of appearance or publicity. Never, he uttered. “That rang true for a long, long time when I said, ‘If you say no, it’ll be a no forever,’ because the first public appearance of her wearing Valentino was when she was under contract.”

Why does Zendaya wear mostly antique clothing?

Famous for creating historic outfits for his clientele, Roach recently said in a Vogue interview that when he and Zendaya first started working together, it was “necessity” for him to go through archives because so few designers were willing to wear her.

“For the past 13 years, since Zendaya and I started working together, we have been [pulling vintage]. When we initially started, no one would lend her things, so at first, it was a need, he told Vogue in February. “As I own a vintage store in Chicago and am from the vintage scene, many of the items she wore were either vintage or from my store.”

Renowned celebrity stylist Law Roach, best known for crafting Zendaya’s iconic fashion moments, has called out the “Big 5” fashion houses for rejecting him earlier in his career. In a candid statement, Roach revealed how these luxury brands shut their doors on him, a decision he says shaped his philosophy. “If you say no, it’ll be no forever,” he remarked, reflecting his firm stance against working with brands that didn’t support him in the beginning.

Roach, who has now cemented his status as a trailblazer in the fashion world, emphasized how such rejections fueled his determination to succeed. He transformed his setbacks into stepping stones, building a reputation for innovative and daring fashion statements that turned his clients, especially Zendaya, into red-carpet royalty.

His critique sheds light on the exclusivity of the fashion industry and its tendency to overlook emerging talent. Roach’s success story to resilience and authenticity can pave the way to greatness, even in the face of rejection.
