On NH-5. If accepted, this could be the second road in Tamil Nadu to be offered a private concession after a 52 km stretch from Madurai to Kanyakumari.

The Madurai-Kanyakumari National Highway has already been awarded to a concessioner under TOT. NHAI, whose roads are distributed under ToT mode, will get a lump sum and it is up to the concessionaire to ensure its investment.

NHAI sources told the media that this was a relatively new concept and efforts were being made to attract bigger and better companies who had the means to maintain the roads better. Sources said that in the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model, the concessionaire would have to invest money, construct the road, and risk waiting for land or delay in construction.
