China warns hospitals not to reject patients

A top Chinese official expressing “shame” has warned hospitals treating those infected with Covid-19 not to turn away other patients after a woman suffered a miscarriage and a man died from cardiac arrest during the ongoing lockdown in Xian city in northwest China.

On the 16th day of the lockdown, hospitals in Xi’an, a city of 13 million, turned away hospitals for pregnant women and the deceased because they could not provide proof of negative nucleic acid tests.

Since December 9, Xi’an has recorded more than 1,800 locally transmitted Covid-19 cases.

Chinese Vice Premier Sun Chunlan said she was deeply ashamed and heartbroken by the woman’s miscarriage. She was quoted as saying by the South China Morning Post: “It is very heartbreaking and I am deeply ashamed that this issue has arisen.”

“This shows that the epidemic prevention and control work is not strict enough and not solid enough. The lessons learned are very profound,” Sun added.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong authorities on Friday ordered about 170 people, including several officials, to be quarantined at government facilities after attending a birthday party in case two guests later tested positive for the coronavirus.

About 170 guests attended the birthday party, including about 9 government officials and nearly 20 lawmakers.
