Covid-19: India adds 3,33,533 new cases, 525 deaths in last 24 hours; daily positivity rate at 17.78%

Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday morning showed India registered 3,33,533 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, slightly lower than the previous day. The death toll soared to 4,89,409, with 525 new deaths.

Daily active cases surged by 73,840, bringing active cases to 21,87,205. Active cases accounted for 5.57% of total infections. A total of 2,59,168 recoveries have been recorded in the past 24 hours, the health bulletin said.

Meanwhile, the daily positivity rate edged up to 17.78% compared to 17.22% on Saturday. The weekly positive rate was 16.87%.

Notably, India is the second most affected country in the world by the coronavirus pandemic after the United States.

To date, more than 1.6 billion doses of the vaccine have been administered in nationwide vaccination campaigns. This takes into account 71,10,445 doses of the vaccine given in the past 24 hours, including 5,42,321 booster or “prophylaxis” doses. Among the hardest-hit cities, Delhi saw a slight rise in new infections on Saturday to as many as 11,486. A total of 45 people have died in the past 24 hours, the highest number since June 5 last year.

Mumbai, on the other hand, saw a 28% drop in new Covid-19 cases as the city reported 3,568 infections on Saturday. That’s down 83 percent from Mumbai’s all-time high two weeks ago.

Driven by a surge in Omicron, Maharashtra continued to top India’s Covid-19 scale with 46,393 cases in the past 24 hours. Kerala came in second with 45,136 cases, followed by Karnataka (42,470), Tamil Nadu (30,744) and Gujarat (23,150).

Meanwhile, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have reported more than 10,000 cases in the past 24 hours.

Partha Sarathi Deb passed away on Friday, and his remains were taken to Technician’s Studio at 12 pm.

Bengali actor Partha Sarathi Deb, aged 68, passed away at a Kolkata hospital while undergoing treatment, according to his family.

Partha passed away at 11:50 pm on Friday night due to COPD-related ailments. He had been admitted to state-run M R Bangur hospital for the last month, and his condition worsened over the past week, and he was in the ICU.

Actor Jeet expressed sadness over the loss of colleague and WBAF committee member Partha Sarathi Deb on X, sharing a photo and offering condolences to his bereaved family and friends.

Actress Rupanjana Mitra announced the news on Facebook, writing a lengthy note in Bengali.

Partha, the vice president of the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists Forum, condoled the death of actor Amit Shah and announced that his body would be taken to Technician Studio, a familiar place for him.

The forum is deeply saddened by the actor’s passing and will keep his remains at Technician’s Studio on March 23, where his loved ones, teammates, and well-wishers can pay their last respects.
