In First Sentencing Over Delhi Riots, Man Gets 5 Years In Jail

A Delhi court on Thursday sentenced Dinesh Yadav to five years in prison, the first person to be convicted in connection with the violent unrest that swept parts of the capital in February 2020.
He also has to pay a fine of Rs 12,000, his lawyer Shikha Garg was quoted by news agency PTI.

The exact order of his sentencing has not been released.

Yadav also became the first person to be sentenced for rioting.

Dinesh Yadav was convicted last month of participating in an unlawful assembly and riot, and taking part in looting and burning down the house of a 73-year-old woman.

His crime carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

The prosecution argued that Yadav was an “active member of the mob” and played a role in vandalizing and burning down the women’s home in Bhagirathi Vihar in Gokulpuri, northeast Delhi.

The elderly woman, named Manori, said about 150 to 200 thugs attacked her house and looted several valuables when her family was away on February 25.
