Light rain, gusty winds: Delhi wakes up to a wet Wednesday

Air quality in Delhi was in the “poor” category on Wednesday morning, with light rain and gusts of 30-40km/h expected later in the day. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the hourly air quality index (AQI) at 7 a.m. was 280.

On Tuesday, the 24-hour AQI averaged 270, putting it in the worse category. AQIs between 0 and 50 are considered “good”, 51 and 100 are considered “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “moderate”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor”, and 401 and 500 “severe”.

The AQI could improve to “moderate” or “satisfactory” by Wednesday night due to projected rainfall and related wet precipitation, the air quality monitoring agency Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research said Tuesday. “From Thursday, relatively high winds are likely to enhance dispersion and keep the AQI at ‘moderate’ or ‘low-end differential’.”

Wednesday could see a low of 13C and a high of 21C. Tuesday saw a low of 11.5C and a high of 26C, 3C above normal. Dense fog is possible on Thursday morning, with a low of 8C expected and a high of 22C.
