Mahabharat’s Bheem, actor Praveen Kumar Sobti passes away aged 74

Actor Praveen Kumar Sobti, popular for his role as Bhim in BR Chopra’s mythical drama Mahabharata, has died at the age of 74. Praveen is known for her huge stature and has played the role of follower, thug and bodyguard in many Bollywood films. The 6ft 6in actor and athlete is from Punjab.

Before entering the acting industry, Pravin was a hammer and discus athlete. He is a four-time Asian Games medallist (2 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze) and also represented India at two Olympic Games (Mexico 1968 and Munich 1972). He is also an Arjuna Award recipient. It was because of the sport that Praveen was awarded the position of Deputy Commander of the Border Security Force (BSF).

After success in track and field, Praveen switched to show business in the late ’70s. In an interview with the Times of India, Pravin recalled signing his first Bollywood film when he was competing in Kashmir. His first role was in director Ravikant Nagaich, where he had no dialogue.

Later, Pravin made another film in 1981, titled Rakshasa, which followed with more roles. In Bollywood, his most memorable performance was as Mukhtaar Singh in Amitabh Bachchan’s Shahenshah.

Praveen’s film credits include Karishma Kudrat Kaa, Yudh, Zabardast, Singhasan, Khudgarz, Loha, Mohabbat Ke Dushman, Ilaaka and more. In the late ’80s, he would be signed to play Bhim in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat, which would immortalize him in the eyes of audiences. Like other actors, Pravin became synonymous with his role on the popular Mythology show.

In 2013, Pravin tried to enter politics and ran for parliamentary elections with the Aam Aadmi party vote in Delhi’s Wazirpur constituency, but lost. After this defeat, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2021, Pravin expressed dissatisfaction with not receiving a pension from the Punjab government.

The first day of Family Star’s box office collection features Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur’s Telugu film, directed by Parasuram Petla.

The Telugu film Family Star, directed by Parasuram Petla, has collected an estimated ₹5.75 crore nett in India on its first day of box office collection, marking an impressive opening day for the film.

Family Star reported a 38.45% Telugu occupancy on day 1, with Warangal having the highest occupancy (57.5%), followed by Visakhapatnam and Kakinada (56.75% each).

Parasuram Petla’s Family Star marks Vijay and Mrunal’s first collaboration, featuring a cast including Abhinaya, Vasuki, Rohini Hattangadi, Ravi Babu, and Divyansha Kaushik’s special appearance.
