“Massive Uncertainty”: Delhi Cinema Owners’ Plea After New Curbs Kick In

The multiple operators have urged the Delhi government to reconsider its decision and allow them to operate cinemas with certain passengers, such as requiring double vaccinations to enter the lobby and limiting the seating capacity to 50%.
According to the Diversity Association of India (MAI), the Delhi government’s decision to close the city’s cinemas and implement the “yellow” alerts of the Gradation Response Action Plan (GRAP) has created “great uncertainty” and may lead to “ Irreparable loss”. Damage to the Indian film industry”.

MAI did not close cinemas, but urged the Delhi government to consider introducing a “dual vaccination requirement” to enter cinemas, just like in some other states including Maharashtra.

“Alternatively, the 50% seat capacity limit can be reintroduced in movie theaters. We call on the government to recognize the unique social, cultural and economic value of the Indian film industry and provide the support it desperately needs to survive an unprecedented period of difficulty,” MAI Chairman Kamal Gianchandani said.

With the increase in COVID-19 cases, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority on Tuesday ordered the immediate closure of schools, universities, cinemas and stadiums, and imposed various restrictions on the operation of shops and public transportation, as the yellow alarm sounded in the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) .

The “yellow” alarm restriction stipulates that stores and venues for non-essential goods and services, as well as shopping centers, will be opened according to the parity formula between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

According to MAI, the period since March 2020 is undoubtedly the most challenging period facing Indian cinemas.

After being approved to reopen, the cinema has demonstrated its ability to operate safely for the public and employees who comply with safety protocols.

“Although we fully understand that the government will eventually need to take the necessary precautions, we will require cinemas to receive the same treatment as similar industries and institutions,” Gianchandani said.
