Oscars 2022: Suriya’s ‘Jai Bhim’ earns eligibility for Best Foreign Film
On Thursday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the list of 276 films eligible for the 94th Academy Awards. In these films, Suriya’s hardline social drama Jai Bhim is India’s entrance to the academy. On January 18, Suriya’s acclaimed legal drama “Jai Bhim” made India proud as one of its scenes appeared in the “Academy Scenes” section of the Oscars YouTube channel. ‘Jai Bhim’ is competing against others in critically acclaimed films such as ‘The Jockey’, ‘Cruela’, ‘Dune’, ‘Eternal Love’, ‘Black Widow’, ‘Boogie’, ‘Candyman’ , “The Eternals”, “Godzilla Vs Kong”, “King Richard” and other movies.
This courtroom drama is inspired by real events in Tamil Nadu in the 1990s, when an innocent tribesman was falsely accused of theft, tortured in custody, and ultimately killed. Surya portrayed Chandru’s character in the film based on Justice K. Chandru, who fought for the deceased’s wife.
