Oscars 2022: Suriya’s ‘Jai Bhim’ earns eligibility for Best Foreign Film
On Thursday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the list of 276 films eligible for the 94th Academy Awards. In these films, Suriya’s hardline social drama Jai Bhim is India’s entrance to the academy. On January 18, Suriya’s acclaimed legal drama “Jai Bhim” made India proud as one of its scenes appeared in the “Academy Scenes” section of the Oscars YouTube channel. ‘Jai Bhim’ is competing against others in critically acclaimed films such as ‘The Jockey’, ‘Cruela’, ‘Dune’, ‘Eternal Love’, ‘Black Widow’, ‘Boogie’, ‘Candyman’ , “The Eternals”, “Godzilla Vs Kong”, “King Richard” and other movies.
This courtroom drama is inspired by real events in Tamil Nadu in the 1990s, when an innocent tribesman was falsely accused of theft, tortured in custody, and ultimately killed. Surya portrayed Chandru’s character in the film based on Justice K. Chandru, who fought for the deceased’s wife.
The official description of the Oscars YouTube channel video reads: “Jai Bhim weaves a real-life case study hosted by activist lawyer Chandru’s tireless efforts to bring justice to Tamil Nadu’s indigenous tribes. Writer and director TJ Gnanavel reveals the story The narrative is established and executed.”
‘Jai Bhim’ is produced by Suriya and his wife under 2D Entertainment. The production company shared the news on its Twitter account, calling the achievement “an honor of the highest order!” and shared that voting for video nominations will begin on January 27 and will close on February 1.
