As the hijab row in Karnataka intensifies, Pakistani ministers have now commented on support for free choice, condemning bars set up in classrooms for burqa-clad students. Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said it was a serious violation of basic human rights. “Depriving Muslim girls of their education is a gross violation of basic human rights. Depriving anyone of this basic right and intimidating them by wearing a hijab is absolutely oppressive. The world must recognize that this is part of India’s Muslim ghetto state plan ,” said the minister.
Pakistan Information and Broadcasting Minister Ch Fawad Hussain said what was happening in India was terrifying. “Under unstable leadership, Indian society is declining at breakneck speed. Wearing the hijab is a personal choice, just like any other citizen who wears it must freely choose,” he tweeted.

A huge political spat has erupted in Karnataka, drawing international attention for not allowing hijab-wearing students into classrooms. Pakistan-born activist Malala tweeted: “The refusal to let girls wear hijab to school is horrific. Objectification of women still exists – for wearing less or more. Indian leaders must stop Muslim women marginalized.”

Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, referring to the stone-throwing incident on the turban row, said action would be taken against the perpetrators. Police arrested some outsiders, not students.

Tax Minister R Ashoka said the government is not in favour of wearing a hijab or kesari. “Students can wear whatever they want on the street, but dress is mandatory in school. We have closed schools and colleges as a precaution for student safety. Congress supports this politics,” the minister said.
