Gasoline and diesel prices in the country remained unchanged on January 17. This comes after the central government cut the consumption tax on November 4, 2021, to ease prices that hit record highs.

The central government will tax petrol at Rs 5 per litre and diesel at Rs 10 per litre, resulting in a corresponding reduction in retail pump rates. Many states and federal territories have since cut their local sales tax or value-added tax (VAT) to further ease the burden on consumers.

Fuel is relatively cheaper than other metros in Delhi as the state government earlier decided to lower the value added tax (VAT) on petrol. From midnight on December 1, Delhi reduced the value-added tax on petrol from 30% to 19.4%, reducing the price by about 8 rupees to 95.41 rupees per litre. Diesel prices in the nation’s capital also remained unchanged at Rs 86.67 per litre.

In Mumbai, the price cut on November 4 lowered petrol prices to Rs 109.98 a litre, which remained unchanged. Diesel is priced at Rs 94.14 per litre.
